Flip the Script or My Sanity
If I have to type any definition for any approach one more time, I might actually flip a table. But for the sake of this blog (and my grades), here it is : Flipped Classroom approach basically reverses traditional teaching. Students watch the "lecture" at home via video material, and class time is reserved for active practice. Actually, this is great because it maximizes speaking time rather than listening the teacher. The disadvantage? It relies entirely on students actually watching the video at home (!) —which, let's be honest, is a bold expectation.
For this task, our group decided to choose the "Hello" unit from the coursebook. We focused on the very beginner trio of English: Countries, Nationalities, and Languages. We created a video lesson that included pauses for student practice and followed it up with an interactive quiz. Now, regarding the process: trying to coordinate the schedules of our university is harder than teaching advanced grammar to a toddler. Our biggest challenge was simply finding a time where we weren't all in class, asleep, or drowning in tons of other assignments (seriously, having a submission, a presentation, and a project all colliding on the same day is brutal—I really wish the department would communicate better internally so we could actually turn in efficient, quality work instead of just surviving). After endless text messages and scheduling chaos, we managed to meet. We split the workload fairly, with the whole team contributing to both the video structure and the writing of the lesson plan. We used Canva for the video creation. It is genuinely a lifesaver. For the practice activity, we used Wordwall to create questions reinforcing the nationalities and languages we taught. Both tools are incredibly user-friendly, and I will definitely use them with my future students—assuming I survive until graduation.
For those who want to witness our desperate flailing,
Here is our video material.
Here is our Wordwall post-lecture practice material.
Here is our lesson plan. (both first and final version)
I wish this were the last one, but we all know it won't be. Take care until the next one.
Peace Out!
